If the computer / laptop working normally you can always displaying your computer screen whenever you use monitor, projector or television. On Windows operating system you can control your display by pressing windows logo ⊞ + p on your keyboard whenever you connect to additional display or screen. Whenever your display having trouble (make sure your computer is still running by looking on your computer light indicator) there is potentially 2 suspect: One is the monitor it's self and the other is video card (VGA) or any internal part of your computer / laptop. Then how to identify which one that having trouble? The most simple way is displaying your screen on another monitor, projector or television.
If the VGA and HDMI port on your computer / laptop working normally you can test this method by displaying your computer screen on another displaying devices. If the problem didn't displayed on another display screen and working normally there then the problem is on existing monitor it's self. If the problem still on there whenever you've been adding / switching monitor, projector or television then maybe its your video card (VGA) damaged and it can be costly to change the video card if your computer having high specs on it (Usually on gaming laptop or computer).
In case if the the problem is on your existing display you can always try to switching it's cable to make sure on it's cable connector isn't the source of the problem. There are usually 3 type of monitor port: VGA, HDMI and display port. And don't forget to check your power cable of your monitor, if the light of monitor indicator didn't displayed at all then it's the main suspect.
